Dr William Boothe = Ocular Herpes - Herpes simplex, type I. This is the same virus which causes cold sores and it can infect the eyes also. It occurs on the cornea, usually only on one eye, and is also known as Herpes Keratitis. It can affect only the surface, or deeper layers, and can heal well, or can cause scarring, loss of vision and even blindness. Occasionally it develops inside the eye and is then known as Herpes Retinitis or Herpes Uveitis. Symptoms are blurred vision, pain, redness, and light sensitivity.

Cataract surgery is a highly successful procedure. Improved vision is the result in over 95% of cases, unless there is a problem with the cornea, retina, optic nerve or other structures.

This step in the procedure can sometimes cause small blood vessels to burst, resulting in bleeding or subconjunctival hemorrhage into the white (sclera) of the eye, a harmless side effect that resolves within several weeks. Increased suction typically causes a transient dimming of vision in the treated eye. Once the eye is immobilized, the flap is created. This process is achieved with a mechanical microkeratome using a metal blade, or a femtosecond laser microkeratome (procedure known as IntraLASIK) that creates a series of tiny closely arranged bubbles within the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back, revealing the stroma, the middle section of the cornea.

LASIK DALLAS - Dr William Boothe = Dry eye: Dry eye is characterized by a white or mildly reddened eye combined with a sandy, gritty, dry feeling. Paradoxically, dry eye can sometimes be accompanied by excessive reflex tearing. The dryness itself can stimulate an increase in the production of tears. Dry eye, also known as KCS or keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is very common and is increasing in frequency due to an aging population and increased pollution in the air. Dry eye is more common in females. It is sometimes associated with dry mouth (Sjogren's syndrome) or autoimmune diseases. Other factors thought to contribute to dry eye are some drugs such as antihistamines, antidepressants, or diuretics (water pills). There are many OTC eye drops available for the self-medication of dry eyes. These vary in their formulations, consistency, and preservatives used. Although these lubricants are effective for treating many cases of dry eye, a physician also should be consulted.

Tears are a major protective agent for the eyes. Tears not only wash away dust from the eyes, but also soothe the eyes, provide oxygen and nutrients to the cornea, as well as help defend against eye infections by removing microorganisms that can colonize in the eyes. Tears are of composed of three distinctive layers. The outer lipid section consists of an oily film that counters evaporation and keeps the eye moistened. The middle region is made of mostly water that moisturizes the eyes and some nutrients and proteins that assist in limiting eye infections. The inner coating contains mucous that allows the tear film to spread and reduces evaporation from the eye. Each layer is vital to the health of the eyes and different parts of the eye add to the tears which can lead to any number of possible problems like shortage of nutrients or mucous. It also shows that dry eyes are more likely if there is a depletion of tears due to reduction of generation because of age or by weather issues like windy days which can dry out tears quickly. The importance of tears is also shown by all the over the counter medication that uses eye drops, ointments, or oral capsules designed to either keep the eye moisturized or copy the role of tears. TheraTears™ is an example of manufactured teardrops whose role is to mimic the role of tears.

The computer that controls the laser is programmed to have it focus on spots of varying sizes across the ablation area, rather than equal-sized flying spots, or in a broadbeam fashion.

If retinopathy has caused macular edema laser surgery may prevent further loss of vision. The macula is the small area in the center of the retina that allows us to see fine details clearly. The laser will be focused on the damaged retina near the macula to decrease the fluid leakage.

Dr. William A. Boothe = As we age, the lens of the eyes becomes rigid, loses its flexibility, and thus its ability to focus as well. The exact cause of presbyopia is still under research and debate. One theory is that the fibers in the lens become stiffened and are unable to change shape as well. Another theory is that the lens grows too big and is not able to change shape as well. Other factors such as trauma, occupation, and lifestyle may be factors as well.
